We are a Community Based Organization founded in Kenya to help mitigate the effects of climate change by encouraging tree planting exercises while involving the various local communities.

Eco Green Initiative comprises of over 120 volunteer members from Mulala/Emali Ward and is registered as a Community Based Organization, (Certificate Number 44057) by the Department of Social Development of the Ministry of The East Africa Community, Labor and Social Protection as of the 23rd of April, 2018.

Eco Green Initiative was started in November 2017 as part of action plans that were recommended by a stakeholder meeting of members of NEW DAWN, a WhatsApp group that comprises resident Professionals of Mulala and Mbitini Divisions, Makueni County, Kenya. The meeting was also attended by the Government of Makueni County officials: Director Forests, Sand Harvesting Authority, Climate Change, ECM Roads, ECM Water and Environment, ECM Devolution, and MCA for Emali/Mulala Ward.

 

Up to December 2022, Eco Green Initiative has operated in the administrative locations of Mulala, Emali, Ngetha, Kyemundu, Kakutha, Mungyani, Mutiswa, Mutyambua Kavuthu and Masue. We plan to expand to Ithumba (Nguu/ Masumba), Matiliku (Nzaui) and Sultan Hamud (Kiou).

Current membership of Eco Green Initiative includes:

  • Eco Green Initiative school-based Environment clubs (EGI E Clubs)
  • Primary Schools
  • Religious Institutions and
  • Over 1800 active individual members and volunteers.

Voluntary Service Oversees (VSO), Hand in Hand HiH) International, National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) and the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK).

 

Our administrative structure comprises a Team leader, a Trustee, a Patron, and a Secretariate/ Executive Committee.

 

Eco Green Initiative General objectives

  1. Create awareness of climate change and global warming
  2. Identify and implement local sustainable mitigation of impacts of climate change and global warming
  3. Decrease, control and ultimately stop deforestation and forest degradation
  4. Support sustainable forests
  5. Conserve water resources
  6. Raise water tables
  7. Improve agricultural outputs
  8. Increase shamba returns

Some of our specific objectives are:

  • Advocate and create public awareness of environmental (Geographical, Social, Cultural, and Economic) impacts of climate change and global warming
  • Work with communities to develop local and sustainable mitigation of impacts of climate change and global warming
  • Plant and grow over One Million trees on Muuni and surrounding hills (Maatha, Masue, Kyemundu Kathuma and Kwa Kamba)
  • Persuade public institutions, market centres and private land owners to embrace a culture of planting and growing a target of One Million Trees
  • Expand Eco Green Initiative School and Community Based Environment Clubs in all Schools and villages within and around the area of operation
  • Improve quality of the natural environment in the areas of operation.
  • Develop community partnerships toward reduction of runoff rainwater and control soil erosion (eg Gabions, Sand dams) and preserving biodiversity
  • Civic sensitization on controlled sand harvesting and protection of rivers from illegal sand harvesting
  • Encourage the development of a culture of public leisure, recreation and tourism on some of our hills
